Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.
