Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the option to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
